The revolution associated with the death in police custody of Mahsa Amini (Persian: مهسا امینی) began on 16 September 2022 and is ongoing as of February 2023.

In Bulgaria, like more than 100 countries, There were several protests by Iranian and Bulgarian against the Islamic Republic.

After the support of civil society and Bulgarian individuals, Bulgarian representatives in the EU were one of the first who stood against the Islamic Republic to not only support Iranians but also stand with democratic and human rights values.

Unfortunately, after congress stop working, The government decided to behave differently and send a congratulatory message to the Islamic Republic’s foreign minister Amir-Abdolhian on the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution.

The Islamic Republic is not a main trader with Bulgaria but in 2022 trade between the two countries almost doubled. This is not enough reason for such behavior. It seems Mr. Nikolay Milkov, follows the Russian path, not the EU. This can lead to an isolated policy which leads Bulgaria to an unclear standing. Staying in the middle might bring some benefits but in the bigger picture, made predictability unclear too. Thus other countries cannot decide where to put Bulgaria in their equations and usually, they prefer to see the worse scenario.
